amid the ongoing Iran War. In a post on Truth Social, Trump asked whether the waterway should be renamed “TRUMP STRAIT”, claiming it was now under US control. He added that, like America itself, it would be “hotter” than ever before. Trump's remark comes as the US Iran Conflict continues to centre heavily on the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on vessels have triggered a fresh cycle of military retaliation between Washington and Tehran.
Trump Floats New Name For Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a crucial route for global energy shipments. Trump's comments came shortly after the US military targeted two Iranian government tankers in what American officials described as retaliation for Iranian attacks on vessels in the waterway.
According to an American official cited by Axios, the strikes represented a new “tanker for tanker” approach approved by Trump. The two Iranian tankers were reportedly anchored off Iran's northern coast, beyond the US naval blockade line, when they were attacked. US drones fired missiles at the vessels and struck their engine rooms, according to US officials.
US-Iran Conflict Escalates Around Strait
The tanker strikes were part of a wider US operation that reportedly hit around 100 targets across Iran. US officials said the targets included IRGC air-defence positions, radar installations, communications facilities, mine-laying capabilities and missile launchers. Anti-ship cruise missile and attack-drone launchers were also targeted.
The latest attacks have further elevated the importance of the Strait of Hormuz in the conflict. Any disruption to the waterway has the potential to affect international energy supplies and shipping.
