The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday hit out at the Congress amid the opposition's nationwide protest over the SIR row and demanding action against
CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying that the grand old party's leadership is leaving no stone unturned in its attempt to undermine India's constitutional system. Addressing a presser, BJP leader Smriti Irani said that instead of introspecting on its defeat, the Congress is attacking the election commission. In another statement, Smriti Irani said that the Election Commission embodies the dignity of Indian democracy, it has been admired by many nations across the globe. Questioning the grand old party, Smriti Irani asked, "Is Congress leadership giving a clean chit to the EC in states like Himachal, Punjab, Kerala, Karnataka, where the BJP is not in power?" "Why does the Congress party want the names of deceased voters to be restored in electoral rolls," the BJP leader and former Union Minister asked. Congress, other opposition parties, and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) - which calls itself a political pressure group - have been protesting and questioning the Centre, doubting its intentions behind conducting the Special Intensive Revision - electoral revision - exercise in the country. The row over SIR erupted after an Indian Express report claimed that the two election commissioners -- Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu — have raised objections over some clauses related to the SIR process, including the inclusion of Form 6. Ever since this report surfaced, the opposition has been training its guns at the Centre and renewed its 'voter chori' allegation. The report has also mentioned that the two ECs had raised as many as 14 objections over a period of 10 months, related to the SIR.
