Tata Sons could see a fresh round of discussions around its leadership, with the company’s board scheduled to meet in Mumbai on Thursday, September 17.
The Tata Sons board may request N Chandrasekaran to reconsider his decision to step down, according to a report from ET Now. The development comes shortly after the Reserve Bank of India rejected Tata Sons’ application to surrender its certificate of registration as a Core Investment Company (CIC). The RBI decision has significant implications for Tata Sons, which is treated as an upper-layer non-banking financial company (NBFC) by the central bank. Tata Sons had applied in March 2024 to surrender its certificate of registration as a CIC. The RBI’s rejection of that application means the company will need to prepare for a potential stock market listing, subject to the applicable regulatory requirements. The development has added another layer of uncertainty around the future leadership of the group’s holding company. Meanwhile, the RBI has also moved a caveat petition before the Bombay High Court. Through the petition, the central bank has sought to ensure that it gets an opportunity to present its arguments if Tata Sons chooses to challenge the RBI’s decision through legal proceedings. Tata Trusts Begin Process For Chandra’s Successor The leadership transition process had also started earlier. On August 13, SDTT, one of the key Tata trusts, said Tata Trusts would initiate the process of setting up a selection panel. The committee is expected to identify and recommend a successor to Chandrasekaran. However, the process has faced complications within the Tata Trusts. SRTT has reportedly been barred by the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner from holding meetings and taking decisions. Tata Insiders Seek Continuity Amid Uncertainty Against this backdrop, some Tata insiders are understood to be seeking continuity in leadership, particularly as the group deals with multiple developments surrounding Tata Sons. The upcoming board meeting could therefore become an important point of discussion on Chandrasekaran’s future and the leadership transition at Tata Sons.
