Schools, colleges and other educational institutions in several parts of Pune will remain closed today, on January 19. Holiday has been announced in all
government and private schools due to the international cycling event ‘Pune Grand Tour 2026’. The announcement comes in line with the prologue race of the event, which is scheduled to take place in the city on Monday (January 19, 2026). During this event major roads will be closed to traffic between 9 am and 6 pm. The Pune traffic department has issued advisories regarding road closures on key stretches, including Ganesh Khind Road, Jangli Maharaj Road and Fergusson Road. The five-day Continental Road Cycling Race for Men, will be held from January 19 to 23. It will cover a 437-km route across the Deccan Plateau and the Sahyadri Range, featuring sharp turns and demanding elevations. The event has drawn 171 cyclists from 29 teams representing 35 countries. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has issued an order declaring a one-day holiday for educational institutions located in areas around Fergusson College, Ganeshkhind, Jangli Maharaj Road and adjoining internal roads to prevent inconvenience to students and parents. The holiday will apply to all anganwadis, government and private schools, junior and senior colleges, as well as professional educational institutions within the jurisdictions of the Shivajinagar–Ghole Road, Vishrambaugwada–Kasba, Dhole Patil Road, Bhawani Peth, Aundh–Baner, Kothrud–Bavdhan, Sinhagad Road and Warje–Karvenagar ward offices. Meanwhile, police have advised residents to use Metro services and avoid road travel during the event. (With inputs from PTI)
