Something went wrong with Claude on Wednesday, and a lot of people noticed right away. According to a report from Newsweek, Anthropic's AI platform ran
into a wave of errors that knocked out access for thousands of users across its app, website, and coding tool. It started small, or at least it looked that way at first. Right around 3:30 p.m. EDT, complaints began piling up on Downdetector. By the time things settled down, more than 2,000 reports had come in. Claude Code took the brunt of it, accounting for roughly half of all the complaints, but plenty of people also couldn't log into the regular app or web console. Anthropic's status page told the same story. Several services flipped over to "major outage," which stood out given that the platform typically runs smoothly more than 99 percent of the time when you look at the last 90 days. There's a silver lining here, though. This wasn't a days-long saga. Downdetector's numbers show the worst of it cleared up within about an hour.
What Anthropic Had to Say
The company didn't try to dodge questions about it. In a statement given to the publication, an Anthropic spokesperson said the team was aware users were hitting errors on Claude.ai, Claude Code, and the API, and that engineers were working to get everything back online. One thing worth noting: Anthropic hinted this might not be the final word on the matter. The company said more updates could come as it kept investigating what actually caused the spike in errors.
