US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he called off a planned second wave of attacks on Venezuela after the country began releasing “large numbers”
of political prisoners this week. "Venezuela is releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign of "Seeking Peace." This is a very important and smart gesture. The USA and Venezuela are working well together... Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks," he said on his Truth platform. Venezuela on Thursday freed several jailed high-profile opposition leaders, activists, and journalists, a move the government said was aimed at “seeking peace.” The Venezuelan government’s move comes less than a week after former president Nicolás Maduro was captured by US forces to face drug-trafficking charges. Trump, speaking in an interview with Fox News, praised the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez, saying, “They’ve been great. … Everything we’ve wanted, they’ve given us.” Jorge Rodríguez, the acting president’s brother and head of Venezuela’s National Assembly, said a “significant number” of detainees would be released, though he did not specify how many. For years, the US government and Venezuela’s opposition have called for the broad release of jailed politicians, critics, and civil society members. Caracas, however, maintains that it does not hold anyone for political reasons.
