What is the story about?
Chennai: After weeks of erratic spells and cloudy mornings, Chennai is finally set to take a breather from heavy rains. As per the latest India Meteorological
Department (IMD) data and city-based weather bloggers, the Northeast Monsoon (NEM) 2025 has been rather underwhelming so far, but signs of revival are now on the horizon.
Sub-Par Monsoon So Far
The last two weeks have seen no positive anomaly in rainfall across Tamil Nadu since 23rd October, leaving residents and farmers anxious about a possible failed monsoon season, according to a report by a solo forecaster on X (Chennai Rains). Weather experts describe the period as “sub-par”, with the daily rainfall chart staying consistently below normal.

The popular local weather handle noted that the disappointment is understandable but not permanent. “A sense of despair about a possible failed monsoon season has crept in the minds of many and rightfully so. But things are getting back to shape for a revival,” the forecast stated.
Chennai Weather: Thunderstorms Likely Today, But Dry Spell Ahead
According to IMD’s 7-day forecast, Chennai will see partly cloudy skies with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms on Sunday (November 9), possibly accompanied by lightning. However, from Monday onwards, the skies are expected to turn generally cloudy with only light rainfall and no major weather warnings.Maximum temperatures will hover around 33–34°C, while minimums will settle near 25°C, bringing humid but rain-free conditions from early next week.
When Will the Monsoon Revive?
Meteorologists suggest that the revival phase of the Northeast Monsoon could begin later next week, initially favouring South Tamil Nadu and delta districts before North Coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, begins to receive its fair share of rainfall.“Until then, patience is needed,” Chennai Rains said, adding that isolated heavy rains cannot be ruled out if real-time wind convergence aligns during this interim dry phase.
Humidity to Make a Comeback
With lesser rainfall and clearer skies, humidity levels are expected to rise, a familiar discomfort for Chennaiites as temperatures climb slightly during daytime hours. However, evenings may continue to feel relatively pleasant with light sea breeze and cooler nights around 24–25°C.
