Mumbai Monsoon: Heavy rain has gripped Mumbai, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD)
has issued yellow and orange alerts for several parts of Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, forecasting continued heavy rainfall. As the city prepares for the monsoon fury, authorities have placed 27 districts on alert, urging residents to remain cautious while stepping outside. Since early Tuesday morning (June 30), heavy rain has turned major roadways into slow-moving traffic, particularly in Navi Mumbai. Areas like Sanpada have experienced severe congestion, with vehicles stranded for kilometres. Commuters faced considerable delays as the city’s infrastructure struggled to cope with the intense rainfall, marking a challenging start to the work week.
Mumbai Local Train Services Affected
The local train services, crucial for daily commuters, also faced disruptions across Mumbai. The Kalyan to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) services were delayed by up to 15 minutes, while the fast trains faced similar setbacks.
Passengers reported anxiety and uncertainty regarding their journeys, stressing the difficulties in travelling across the city amid the monsoon season.
IMD Issues Orange Alert
In addition to the yellow alert, the IMD has issued an orange alert for several regions till July 4, indicating the potential for very heavy rainfall. Moreover, the temperatures are expected to drop to 23 degrees Celsius, making it cooler. The forecast predicts rainfall amounts ranging from 80 to 140 mm, with isolated thunderstorms likely to occur.
High tide events, with anticipated heights of 4.16 metres at 12:35 PM on June 30 and 3.61 metres on July 1, are expected to exacerbate the waterlogging issues in low-lying areas.
Airline Issues Flight Advisory
With the adverse weather conditions affecting travel, airlines including Akasa Air and SpiceJet have issued advisories regarding potential flight disruptions. Passengers are encouraged to check their flight statuses before heading to Mumbai Airport to avoid unnecessary delays.
"Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, some flights across our network may be delayed. We realise that this may inconvenience your travel plans and seek your patience and understanding. While this situation is completely beyond our control, please rest assured that our teams are always ready to assist you," Akasa Air stated in a post on X.
