What is the story about?
After the recentincrease in milk prices and rising fuel costs, consumers in Mumbai are now facing another inflation shock as bread prices have gone up
sharply across the city. Major bread company Modern Bread has increased the prices of several bread variants by up to Rs 5 per packet in Mumbai and nearby areas. Market experts, as cited by TOI, believe other leading brands such as Britannia Industries and Wibs, may also revise prices soon.
Why Bread Prices Are Increasing
According to market reports, the biggest reason behind the sudden jump in bread prices is the rising cost of plastic raw materials used in packaging. India imports a large quantity of this plastic material, and the weakening value of the Indian rupee has made imports more expensive. At the same time, higher petrol and diesel prices have increased transportation costs significantly. Manufacturers are also facing rising expenses on preservatives and other ingredients, including salt. Industry insiders say the growing production and delivery costs have forced companies to pass the burden on to customers.

Small Bakers Also Under Pressure
Local bakery owners said they are also struggling with rising packaging and fuel-related costs. Members of bakery associations stated that selling bread at old prices is no longer financially viable due to increasing production expenses.Consumers have expressed concern over the sharp increase, saying bread and milk are basic household essentials. Many families fear that the continuous rise in daily food costs is putting additional pressure on monthly household budgets, especially for middle-class and lower-income households.
