The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised the Social Science syllabus for Class 9, introducing a new chapter titled
‘Resistance and Resilience (1000 CE–1700 CE)’ as part of the updated Understanding Society: India and Beyond curriculum. The revised syllabus released by NCERT places greater emphasis on the political, military and cultural developments involving regional kingdoms and communities between the 11th and 17th centuries. The new chapter is designed to examine how different Indian rulers and communities responded to invasions, territorial expansion and changing political circumstances. According to the revised NCERT syllabus, the chapter will cover themes including safeguarding sovereignty, resistance, alliances and confederacies, art and architecture, languages and literature, the Bhakti tradition, forts and fortifications, and the expansion of the Indian economy and state. New chapter covers regional resistance, warfare and diplomacy A section titled ‘Safeguarding Sovereignty’ will examine the ways in which regional powers sought to protect their territories. This includes warfare, alliances, diplomacy and confederacies formed in response to political and military challenges. The chapter also discusses Arab and Turkish invasions and resistance offered by kingdoms and powers across regions including the Deccan, Malwa, Kashmir and Rajasthan. Check images from the newly launched textbook below: One of the historical figures highlighted in the revised content is Queen Naiki Devi of the Chalukya kingdom, who is associated with the defeat of Muhammad Ghuri in the Battle of Kasahrada near Mount Abu in 1178. NCERT's stated learning objectives for the chapter include helping students understand the cultural, political and military contributions of regional kingdoms and appreciate how different communities and regions shaped India's history between 1000 CE and 1700 CE. The syllabus also asks students to examine how regional kingdoms adapted to changing political, economic and cultural circumstances. The revised curriculum comes as NCERT restructures the sequencing of themes across the secondary-stage Social Science textbooks. As part of this restructuring, ‘India and the World Part 1’, which was earlier positioned for Class 9, has been moved to Class 10. The subject matter will now be taught alongside related themes with similar learning outcomes. The Class 9 Part 2 textbook also introduces a chapter on ‘Governance and Public Policy’, replacing the earlier planned chapter on ‘Authority’. NCERT has said the changes are intended to make the curriculum more coherent, age-appropriate and engaging while aligning the content with students' learning needs. The revised syllabus therefore changes not only individual chapters but also the sequencing of historical and political themes across Classes 9 and 10. The move is aimed at creating greater continuity between related topics while ensuring that students encounter the content at an appropriate stage of their secondary education. The revised Class 9 Social Science syllabus lists Resistance and Resilience as a nine-hour unit and links it to learning outcomes covering India's political, cultural and civilisational development up to the 18th century.
