What is the story about?
Google Maps is set to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to assist users in navigating and selecting destinations, following a significant
redesign announced on Thursday. This overhaul, powered by Google's Gemini technology, will introduce two AI-driven features to the mapping service utilized by over 2 billion users globally.
Introduction of Ask Maps
One new tool, Ask Maps, will enhance the conversational features introduced last November, providing users with suggestions for nearby charging stations, cafes with shorter lines, or comprehensive itineraries for multi-stop road trips.Ask Maps will leverage a database of over 300 million locations and reviews from more than 500 million contributors accumulated since the platform's inception more than two decades ago. While Google executives refrained from commenting on the potential for advertising within Ask Maps, the feature will initially be accessible on the Google Maps mobile app for iPhone and Android users in the U.S. and India, with plans to expand to desktop and other countries later.
Launch of Immersive Navigation
In what executives describe as the most significant enhancement to driving directions, the Gemini technology has also developed a feature called Immersive Navigation, which offers a three-dimensional view to help users better understand their surroundings while driving. The 3D renderings will showcase key landmarks, road medians, and other terrain features, assisting drivers in orienting themselves more effectively. Google asserts that its AI safeguards are now robust enough to prevent the underlying technology from generating fictitious locations, a phenomenon known as 'hallucination.'
