The DMK, in a surprising move on Wednesday, announced that it was boycotting the trust vote faced by Chief Minister Vijay's TVK government and walking
out of the Assembly. Speaking during the proceedings, DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin said the party would not create obstacles for the newly formed TVK government, indicating a softer stand despite refusing to back the confidence motion. "We are boycotting," Udhayanidhi Stalin declared in the Assembly before the DMK staged a walkout. The DMK also abstained from the trust vote as Vijay moved towards comfortably securing majority support in the House with backing from Congress, CPI(M), VCK, IUML, DMDK and a lone AMMK MLA. In a significant political message directed at the new Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi urged Vijay to continue the welfare programmes introduced during the previous DMK government. "We request the CM to continue all the welfare schemes introduced by DMK previously," he said. Udhayanidhi further indicated that the DMK leadership did not want to destabilise the new administration at this stage. "As per instructions given by our party leader MK Stalin, we will not create any hurdle to your government now," he said. Moments later, DMK members walked out of the Assembly.
Vijay Wins Trust Vote
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the crucial Assembly floor test, securing the future of the newly formed TVK government. During the trust vote, Vijay gained backing from the Congress, CPI(M), VCK, IUML, DMDK and a lone AMMK MLA, days after taking oath as Chief Minister following a fractured verdict in the 2026 Assembly election.
But the bigger political story that unfolded inside the House was the deepening split within the AIADMK, now openly divided over whether to support or oppose Vijay’s rise. The confidence motion exposed the split between the camp led by party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) and a rebel faction led by senior leaders SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam.
While the EPS camp opposed the trust vote, sections within the AIADMK openly signalled support for Vijay during the Assembly proceedings, triggering chaotic scenes in the House.
