Kolkata: Nine people were killed and several others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata around 2 am. According
to the Fire Department, all nine deceased were Bangladeshi citizens who had arrived in the city for medical treatment. Six others were injured in the blaze and are currently receiving medical attention. Further details are awaited. In a separate incident that happened on Monday in West Bengal, a massive fire broke out at a hotel situated next to a police station in Tarapith. At least eight people have reportedly died after being trapped inside the building as the flames quickly engulfed the premises. With rescue operations still underway, there are concerns that the death toll could rise. Two fire tenders have been pressed into service to bring the blaze under control, while firefighters are conducting search and rescue operations to check if anyone else is trapped inside the hotel. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities are yet to determine how the blaze started and what caused it to spread rapidly through the hotel.
