School reopening in Tamil Nadu for the 2026–27 academic session has been postponed to June 4 for students of Classes 1 to 12 due to prevailing weather
conditions across the state. The decision was announced by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department, which cited intermittent rainfall, high humidity, heat fluctuations, and concerns over student safety as key reasons behind the change. Schools in the state were originally scheduled to reopen on June 1 after the summer vacation. However, officials said the revised date was finalised after reviewing weather conditions and receiving representations from parents and educational stakeholders seeking a uniform reopening schedule for all classes. Authorities noted that the weather situation in several districts continues to remain unstable due to pre-monsoon rainfall and changing climatic conditions. Officials also pointed to practical concerns related to transportation, availability of drinking water, sanitation, and campus preparedness ahead of the reopening. District-level educational authorities have been instructed to ensure that all necessary arrangements are completed before students return to classrooms. The state government said school administrations must verify that drinking water facilities, toilets, classroom infrastructure, and transport services are functioning properly. Schools have also been asked to coordinate with local authorities wherever required to avoid inconvenience to students and parents during reopening. The move is expected to bring relief to parents and students who had expressed concerns over children travelling in difficult weather conditions, especially in districts witnessing rain spells and rising humidity levels. Education officials said the delay would also provide schools with additional time to complete campus maintenance work and safety checks. The revised reopening date will now ensure that all classes resume together, avoiding confusion for families with children studying in different grades. Earlier, discussions had reportedly taken place over staggered reopening schedules, but the department opted for a common date across all classes. Tamil Nadu has witnessed fluctuating weather conditions in recent weeks, with several regions receiving rainfall accompanied by humid conditions and rising daytime temperatures. Weather forecasts have also predicted continued pre-monsoon activity in parts of the state over the coming days. The School Education Department has urged parents, teachers, and school authorities to cooperate in ensuring a smooth reopening process from June 4 onwards.
