The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered an immediate halt to the manufacture and sale of compounded asafoetida, commonly known
as hing, made by Everest Food Products and Laljee Godhoo and Company. The action follows laboratory findings that certain samples from the two companies failed to meet prescribed food safety and quality requirements. The regulator classified some of the products as sub-standard, non-conforming and misbranded. The latest orders also stressed concerns identified through market surveillance, legal sampling and testing of raw materials used in the manufacture of compounded hing. For Everest Food Products, the regulator has prohibited the sale of compounded asafoetida and its variants until further orders. Laljee Godhoo and Company has similarly been barred from manufacturing and selling compounded hing and compounded asafoetida with immediate effect. (More to come)
