What is the story about?
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan, popularly known as 'Pushpa', was paraded through parts of West Bengal's Falta area on Thursday as part of an ongoing
police investigation into multiple criminal cases registered against him. Khan, who is currently in police custody, was arrested earlier this week near the India-Nepal border in Panitanki, located in North Bengal. His arrest came after several cases, including allegations of extortion, were filed against him.
Visuals from Falta in South 24 Parganas showed police escorting Khan through the locality as investigators carried out their probe. The parade was conducted to assist the investigation and gather information related to the cases registered against him.
A court in Diamond Harbour had earlier remanded Khan to five days of police custody after seven FIRs were lodged against him at Falta police station. The cases reportedly involve allegations of extortion and other offences.
Khan had contested the Falta Assembly seat but was unsuccessful. He had remained out of public view in the South 24 Parganas region since a few days before the repoll held on May 21.
The legal troubles for the TMC leader intensified after the Calcutta High Court on May 26 vacated an interim protection that had shielded him from coercive action in the cases filed against him. Earlier, on May 18, the court had granted temporary relief, allowing him to participate in the repoll process.
However, a day after receiving the protection, Khan publicly announced his withdrawal from the electoral contest.
Police officials have not yet disclosed further details regarding the investigation. The probe is continuing, and authorities are examining the allegations mentioned in the multiple FIRs filed against the TMC leader.
