Several major grocery store chains said they are closely monitoring the powerful winter storm “Fern,” which is forecast to impact nearly half of the US
population, from Texas to New England. Ice, snow and sleet are expected to begin falling in parts of Texas and Oklahoma on Friday. The storm is then forecast to move across the South, bringing freezing rain and sleet, before pushing into the Northeast, where it could dump up to a foot of snow from Washington, DC, through New York to Boston, according to the National Weather Service. At least 177 million people were placed under ice and snow watches or warnings, while more than 200 million faced cold weather advisories or warnings. What is Open, What is Closed During an Adverse Winter Storm?
Despite the grim forecasts, many businesses are expected to remain open as conditions allow. Grocery stores and large retail chains typically continue operating if employees can safely reach their workplaces, especially ahead of major storms when shoppers stock up on food, water, batteries and other essentials. Local bars, restaurants and hotel dining venues also often stay open during snowstorms, at times seeing some of their busiest nights as nearby residents and guests walk in.
Hospitals, pharmacies and many convenience stores usually remain operational, though they may reduce hours or limit staffing if public transportation services are disrupted.
Are Delivery Services Available?
Food delivery apps and courier services typically continue operating during winter weather, but availability often drops as roads turn icy and drivers opt to stay off them for safety. As a result, relying solely on deliveries for food and essentials may not be wise. During past storms, some restaurants have switched to takeout-only service, suspended third-party deliveries, or limited orders to nearby areas reachable on foot.
Emergency management officials have warned that those relying on grocery or meal deliveries during the storm should have a backup plan, as services could be suspended at short notice if conditions deteriorate. The National Weather Service has urged Americans to be prepared for up to a week, stocking essential supplies such as nonperishable food, water, medications and an emergency kit in case travel and delivery services are disrupted for an extended period.
Walmart, Kroger Open?
Walmart said on its website that it will continue to closely monitor conditions and keep its stores operating as long as it is safe to do so.
A Kroger representative, speaking Friday, said the company aims to keep all stores open during regular hours. “Customers should check the Kroger app for updates. When a winter storm threatens, Kroger activates its emergency preparedness plan to quickly restock supplies. Maintenance teams, refrigerated trucks, and essential products are strategically positioned nearby so items like eggs, bread, milk, water, and fuel can be replenished promptly. Kroger also collaborates with its wide network of local vendors to ensure timely access to products,” the spokesperson said, according to AP.
Publix Super Markets, which serves the southeastern US, announced it is adjusting production and delivery schedules in preparation for the winter storm. “The safety of our associates, customers, and communities is our top priority, and Publix will continue making round-the-clock product deliveries as long as it is safe to do so,” the company stated.
