A satirical petition demanding 'California should come to Denmark' is gaining attention as Donald Trump continues to push forward his demand of including
Greenland into United States territory, citing national security. The online petition has so far collected 290K signatures. It suggests that since California is governed by Democrats, of whom the US President is not such a big fan, Trump might agree to sell it to Denmark if paid the right price.

The petition that was first posted in February 2025 reads, “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, you know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, roller skates. Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump! Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.” The petition that first came in 2025 was a counter to Donald Trump, who first shared his idea of acquiring Greenland in 2019. Who Started the Satirical Petition?
A Swiss-French national, Xavier Dutoit, cracked up at the idea of launching this satirical petition when he was holidaying in the Philippines. Before publishing the petition, Dutoit sought help from his Danish friends to give it a final shape.
Speaking to Newsweek, the petitioner said that he was on a vacation in the Philippines. At a bar with some friends, he overheard an American tourist discussing Donald Trump’s bid to acquire Greenland.

Dutoit said that it sounded so absurd that a President of a stable democracy was threatening a third country’s sovereign territory.
EU Chief Says Trump’s Threats Challenge Europe’s Security and Prosperity
Amid Trump's Greenland threats, the European Council President Antonio Costa said that US President's threats to annex Greenland and impose tariffs challenge Europe’s security and principles.
Costa will convene an emergency summit in Brussels with EU leaders Thursday.
Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland for what he says are security reasons has strained trust with European allies.
Costa, speaking at the EU parliament in France, emphasised that only Denmark and Greenland can decide their future. He said EU leaders are united in defending international law and are prepared to counter any coercion, and are rethinking relations with the U.S., a long-time ally.
Is Ukraine Going off Priority As World Focus Shifts To Greenland
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned on Wednesday that the allies might be losing sight of real security challenges posed by Russia in Ukraine as they argue over the future of Greenland.
Rutte said at Davos that he is “a little bit worried that we might drop the ball focusing so much on these other issues.”
Ukraine’s armed forces “need our support now, tomorrow and the day after,” notably with air defense systems and U.S. military equipment that might no longer be “available in Europe for them to defend themselves” if the Greenland dispute escalates, he said.
Rutte insisted “this focus on Ukraine should be our number one priority and then we can discuss all the issues, including Greenland. But it should be Ukraine first.”
