CP Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra and NDA’s nominee, has been elected as India’s new Vice President, defeating INDIA bloc candidate B. Sudershan
Reddy with 452 votes against 300. Beyond the political spotlight, Radhakrishnan’s financial disclosures have drawn attention. Despite owning assets worth more than Rs 67 crore, his election affidavit reveals a surprising detail — he does not own a single personal vehicle, neither a car nor a bike. Four Decades in Politics Radhakrishnan began his political journey at just 16 years old and has remained active for over four decades. Alongside his rise in public life, he has steadily expanded his wealth, largely through investments in textiles and real estate. His business portfolio includes stakes in Spice Textile, Guhan Textile Mills, and Parani Spinning Mills. Movable Assets As per his 2019 Lok Sabha affidavit, Radhakrishnan’s movable assets are valued at Rs 7.31 crore, which include:
- Cash: Rs 6.87 lakh (self) and Rs 18.15 lakh (with wife)
- Bank deposits: Rs 6.53 lakh
- Bonds & shares: Rs 1.28 crore
- Insurance policies: Rs 1.36 crore
- Jewellery (wife): 1,284.71 grams of gold worth Rs 31.5 lakh and 152.25 carats of diamonds valued at Rs 1.06 crore
Immovable Assets
His immovable properties total more than Rs 48 crore, comprising:
- Agricultural land: Rs 35.09 crore
- Non-agricultural land: Rs 5.30 crore
- Commercial building: Rs 6.63 crore
- Residential house in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu: Rs 1.50 crore
Radhakrishnan also declared liabilities worth Rs 2.36 crore in loans.
The Vehicle Gap
What stands out most in his affidavit is the absence of vehicles. For a politician with such extensive landholdings, jewellery, and textile investments, the lack of even a single personal car or bike is unusual in Indian politics, where most leaders declare fleets of luxury vehicles.
