Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a statewide “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” drive covering inspections from July 10 to August
11, 2026, including a special chain restaurant operation on August 11. Across 104 outlets, 2 were shut, 95 were issued improvement notices, and 5 licences were suspended, covering brands like Domino’s, KFC, McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks and Monginis.
Domino’s Outlets in Mumbai Face Action
FDA suspended three Domino’s outlets in Vile Parle, Borivali and R-City Mall, Ghatkopar for major hygiene and compliance lapses, including poor storage, pest issues, missing records and inadequate temperature control. Borivali recorded 54% non-compliance, while Ghatkopar lacked sanitation systems, FIFO/FEFO practices and required food safety documentation.
Satara Production Unit and Sapphire Foods Penalised
A Domino’s production unit in Malkapur, Karad was found with 47% non-compliance, citing infrastructure, cleanliness and pest-control issues. Sapphire Foods India in Karad was penalised for lacking segregation of veg/non-veg preparation and missing expiry/packaging details on ingredients.
Action Against Other Eateries
Across Maharashtra, 120 hotels, restaurants and dhabas were inspected, leading to 54 improvement notices and 11 licence suspensions, while Nashik saw five more suspensions and Palghar’s Daksh Hotel was shut for 45 per cent non-compliance. Violations included hygiene, storage, water quality and pest control failures.
Milk, Ghee and Paneer Seized
FDA seized 698 litres of suspected substandard milk in Raigad, 397.6 kg of ghee worth Rs 2.75 lakh in Nashik, and 55 kg of misbranded frozen paneer from a Pizza Hut outlet in Akola. Several of these units were also found operating without valid registration or licences.
Crackdown on Gutkha and Banned Products
In a parallel drive, FDA acted against gutkha, pan masala and flavoured tobacco across 15 establishments, all of which were found violating rules. Authorities registered 12 FIRs, arrested 15 people, sealed 9 units, seized 3 vehicles and confiscated banned goods worth Rs 25.96 lakh.
Other Food Safety Violations
FDA also seized 1,345 kg of jaggery in Kolhapur, 15 kg of amrakhand, and 598 kg of mava sweets in Pune, with total seizures worth Rs 3.02 lakh, while Amravati saw expired Domino’s dough balls and misbranded masala papad seized. The FDA said inspections will continue statewide with strict action against violators.
