Two students from Kerala, studying at Delhi University, alleged that they were assaulted by Delhi Police and locals near Red Fort on Wednesday. CPI(M)
Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha on Friday, raising the issue and seeking a high-level probe into the matter. Brittas claimed that the students, Aswanth I T and Sudhin K, the students of Zakir Hussain Delhi College, were falsely accused of theft, and were beaten by a mob and faced custodial brutality by police. Brittas, in his letter, alleged that the first-year students were accosted, and police officials joined the crowd, rather than protecting the students. "They were dragged, beaten with fibre lathis, stomped upon, stripped and humiliated,” he wrote. He further stated that their mobile phones were seized, and one student's footwear was taken.

Two young students from Kerala were brutally assaulted by a mob and the police in Delhi - beaten on false accusations and for not speaking Hindi, ridiculed for their traditional Kerala attire. This ordeal came from the very same people sworn to protect them.

Calling the episode a "disturbing mix of cultural prejudice and unconstitutional coercion", Brittas alleged that the students were coerced and abused for not speaking Hindi. When the students tried to explain themselves in English, they were beaten again.
He added that the students were continuously assaulted inside the police station's premises, and locals were also permitted to join the police personnel.
"This ordeal came from the very same people sworn to protect them. An affront to our Constitution & linguistic diversity. Written to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding immediate justice," Brittas wrote in a caption, as he posted the letter on X.

"Such conduct demonstrates a disturbing mix of cultural prejudice and unconstitutional coercion," Brittas stated, noting it violated the constitutional principles of cultural and linguistic diversity.
Lastly, he urged the issue of urgent directions to conduct a high-level investigation into the incident, ensuring that officers and others responsible for the assault are identified and brought to justice.
