In a major development, Maharashtra is all set to build its first '100-acre Innovation City' near Navi Mumbai International Airport, to place the state
at the centre of global innovation ecosystems. This will help in bringing in multiple investors and global innovation ecosystems to India, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. While speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Fadnavis said that the idea was proposed under the AI and the Innovation Ecosystem theme of the 2025 WEF conference before more than 400 investors, and this year the location has been finalised, with the project set to begin in six to eight months. "The city will bring global innovation ecosystems to Mumbai, India. Our goal is to make Mumbai a hub where anyone in the world can easily access a plug-and-play innovation system," he said. Location Identified, Details Sketched
Fadnavis further said that they have identified the location and sketched one of its details, which can now be referred to as the contour. Further sharing the plan, he said that they will be taking "the next six to eight months before beginning."
What Will Innovation City Offer?
The Innovation City will concentrate on advanced technologies, including high-performance computing, AI platforms, humanoid robotics, and renewable energy systems.
Fadnavis highlighted the project's ambition to address climate change and provide solutions for the world, emphasising its role as a catalyst for economic growth in Maharashtra.
The plan for the city comes as Union Minister of Electronics Ashwini Vaishnaw detailed India's comprehensive strategy to dominate the global artificial intelligence landscape, emphasising a shift from big-tech-controlled resources to a public-private partnership model.
During the ongoing global summit, the Minister pointed out that the whole world, and especially the AI-related industry, is appreciating that India is working methodically across all five layers.
The project is positioned as a global hub that brings together research, startups, industry, and education with the aim of bringing solutions “for the world”.
