What is the story about?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine, the United States and Russia will sit down together in November in an effort to revive stalled peace
negotiations. He made the announcement on Sunday, according to Euro News. In an interview with Ukrainian television, Zelenskyy said Kyiv is ready to talk. He explained how the work would be split. Any question about territory, he said, has to be handled by the countries’ leaders, while other matters can be left to technical groups. All of it, he added, can be discussed in November. Talk of a meeting with all three sides at the table has come up many times in recent weeks. This is the clearest confirmation yet of a date.
A Week of Diplomacy
The announcement follows a burst of activity by the Trump administration. US envoy Steve Witkoff met Zelenskyy and European leaders in Oslo on Tuesday. The next day he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. After those meetings, both Kyiv and Moscow said they are willing to return to direct talks with Washington acting as mediator.
Russia’s Position
Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, told reporters that Putin agreed “in principle” to restart talks after Nov. 10. Ushakov said the discussions would center on building a security system for Russia and Ukraine once the conflict is over.Kyiv Backs a Quick Restart
Zelenskyy said he supports Washington’s push to get negotiations going again quickly. In an audio message late on Wednesday, he said the goal is to end the war, bring peace closer and, as he understands it, prepare everything for a meeting between leaders. Why Earlier Talks Stalled
This would not be the first round of three-way negotiations. Representatives of the three countries met three times earlier this year. They held two rounds in Abu Dhabi, in January and February, and then more talks in Geneva in February.Little came of them, apart from exchanges of prisoners of war. Moscow and Kyiv both held to the same basic demands they have long insisted on.
