Mumbai Water Cut: Mumbaikars are set to face a major water shortage for 12 consecutive days, from January 27 to February 7. The Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) has announced that water supply in Mumbai and its eastern suburbs will be reduced by 10% in 12 municipal wards, affecting nearly half the city’s population. This is the second such announcement by the BMC this month. Earlier, several areas experienced a 44-hour water cut from January 20 to 22.
Why is There a Water Cut?
BMC officials say the water cut is needed to carry out maintenance on the pneumatic gate system at the Pise Water Dam, reported news agency PTI. This system controls the flow and level of water in the dam and helps manage floodwater levels. The pneumatic gates use compressed air to support steel panels. During maintenance, water supply will not run at full capacity, and the pressure will be low to prevent leakage and wastage. Officials have asked residents to use water carefully during this period.
