A tense situation unfolded in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Saturday night after eggs were allegedly thrown at Trinamool Congress MLA Madan
Mitra during a protest in the Ariadaha area of his Kamarhati constituency. The incident adds to recent attacks on TMC leaders, including Kalyan and Abhishek Banerjee. A group of young people chased the MLA’s car and hurled eggs at the vehicle while raising slogans of “chor chor” (thief). A video of the incident has been doing rounds on the internet, showing the group targeting the car as it moved through the area. However, the windows of the vehicle were closed, and Mitra was not injured in the incident. The protest reportedly took place when Mitra was returning after attending a party programme. The reason behind the agitation is not immediately clear. This comes days after TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was attacked outside the Chanditala police station in Hooghly district, and he reportedly sustained a head injury. Kalyan Banerjee was attacked when he came to submit a deputation regarding post-poll violence in West Bengal. He was surrounded by protesters who showed black flags, raised slogans, and allegedly assaulted him during the incident. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, "I was coming alone; there was no one with me. BJP members used abusive language and hit me on the head with a deuce ball. My head is bleeding... Now people will decide whether it is right or wrong that MPs are being continuously targeted..." Earlier, Trinamool Congress' second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, was roughed up allegedly by locals when he visited Sonarpur town of South 24 Parganas district to meet families of post-poll violence victims. Stones, shoes and eggs were hurled at the MP by unidentified people, who even attempted to rain blows and kicks on him while chanting "thief, thief", as per reports. He managed to escape the mob wearing a cricket helmet and was helped by aides. Banerjee was later briefly admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata, from where he was discharged following primary medical attention.
