The government on Monday extended the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline by one day to September 16 for the Assessment Year 2025–26, after technical
glitches hit the e-filing portal on the original last date. ITR Filing Deadline Extended - All you Need to Know -The due date for filing ITRs without penalty is now September 16, 2025, for income earned during the fiscal year 2024–25. -The extension came after users experienced technical difficulties accessing the Income Tax e-filing portal on September 15. The platform saw heavy traffic as it was also the last date for payment of the second quarterly instalment of advance tax. Also Read: ITR Deadline Extension Live Updates -"To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025)," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a post on X. -Over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 15, surpassing last year's 7.28 crore filings. -"To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12 am to 2.30 am on 16th September 2025," the CBDT said in a late-night statement. -The Income Tax Department released a guide on resolving browser-related issues, stating: "Having difficulty accessing the Income Tax e-Filing Portal? Sometimes, access difficulties with the Income Tax e-Filing Portal may arise due to local system/browser settings. These simple steps often help resolve such issues." -Despite guidance, users continued to report login problems, payment failures, and issues with downloading AIS (Annual Information Statement). -In reply to a post alleging issues with uploading ITRs and tax payments, the department said: “The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser.” It also asked users to email details, PAN, and mobile number to orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in -Regarding AIS/TIS access problems, the Income Tax department said, "The AIS/TIS facility is functioning without any issues. May we request you to please try accessing it again. In case you continue to face difficulties, please share your details (along with your mobile number & public IP address) with us at cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in" -In May, the CBDT had already extended the ITR deadline from July 31 to September 15, due to late notification of revised ITR forms in April and May. The updates required backend changes in ITR utilities. -The number of ITR filings has steadily grown over the years. For AY 2024–25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were filed by July 31, 2024, up from 6.77 crore in AY 2023–24, marking a 7.5% year-on-year increase.
