The AI adoption era has already begun in the full-swing. Uber has joined the league, and the company is witnessing a massive rise in the usage of “agentic
tools”. Highlighting the modern approach to coding, Praveen Neppalli, Chief Technology Officer at Uber, took to his X account, revealing that the engineering team of Uber is using AI to write code now. Indicating a border shift, he outlined how AI tools can speed up the workflows. How Uber Team Is Using AI For Coding? The Uber CTO mentioned that the company’s internal background coding agent is generating nearly 1800 code changes every week. These changes are written by AI and further reviewed and approved by the engineers before deployment. Citing the numbers, Neppalli stated the AI-generated contributions on code have risen to 8% from 1% in just a couple of months. He further explained that over 95% Uber's engineers are utilising AI support on a monthly basis. Nearly 70% of traditional integrated development environments (IDEs) are now generated with the help of AI, revealed Neppalli. Rather than limited experimentation, Uber engineers have made AI a part of their daily routine workflow.

The Uber CTO stressed that the nature of AI dependency is also changing. He stated that 84% of AI users at the ride-hailing platform are using the agent-style workflows, where the machines can carry out tasks more independently, rather than providing coding suggestions. However, he implied that engineers only stay responsible for oversight, even as the agentic tools take on a more active role at the company.
It is interesting to note that Neppalli shared that the move towards AI tools was mainly driven by the engineers rather than formal directives from the top leadership. Several developers are trying with and integrating these AI services into their workflows independently, suggested the Uber CTO.
