Google has issued a serious warning for millions of Android users, saying that a large number of smartphones are now at risk from new malware attacks.
Some widely downloaded Android apps may contain hidden bug to collect user data without proper permission. According to a recent report by Express, hackers are targeting this popular operating system with a new bug called Arsink. Once installed, this virus can perform a wide range of worrying tasks, including reading text messages, looking at call logs, stealing contacts and even listening to conversations via the phone's microphone. The bug can slow down your phone or even steal personal information. Security experts at Zimperium, users are being tricked into downloading official-looking apps that claim to offer exclusive extras features. As of now, nearly 40 per cent of old Android phones worldwide are unsafe. Cybersecurity researchers also warned users to delete these risky apps as they can secretly track data or infect devices with malware. Some of these apps may look normal at first but can later push harmful updates. These apps are being promoted online using names and logos similar to well-known platforms like Google, Spotify, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram and TikTok. However, they are not available on the official Google Play Store. Instead, they are being advertised through social media ads, links and third-party websites, which makes them risky to download. These apps were downloaded by millions and were found infected with the bug. Google is also advising Android users to check their phone’s software version immediately. Devices that cannot upgrade to newer versions like Android 13 or above are considered more vulnerable. Users are also being asked to turn on built-in safety features such as Google Play Protect. This tool scans apps for suspicious activity and can warn users if an app is unsafe. India is one of the biggest smartphone markets and Android has a massive user base here. That means millions of users could be affected if they ignore such warnings.
