India’s first dedicated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Test City has been inaugurated near Pune, marking a major step forward in the country’s
automotive safety infrastructure. The facility, developed by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), was formally announced on September 3, 2025, at a press conference in Pune. Spread across 20 acres in Takwe near Talegaon, the ADAS Test City has been designed as a controlled testing ground for automotive manufacturers. Built with support from the Ministry of Heavy Industries under the Capital Goods Scheme, the project provides a pseudo-city layout that mirrors typical Indian road conditions. The test environment allows for the validation of a wide range of ADAS technologies, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, blind spot detection, and traffic sign recognition. ARAI officials stressed that the facility is tailored to Indian driving scenarios, which often differ sharply from global norms. According to government data, approximately 1.68 lakh fatalities occurred last year, with driver error accounting for a majority of the cases. ARAI Director Dr. Reji Mathai said the new facility would help manufacturers deliver more reliable safety solutions. “This facility will play a crucial role in advancing ADAS capabilities by empowering manufacturers to deliver best-in-class safety solutions to consumers,” he noted.
