If you thought Audi’s next sports car would simply be a new TT, then that's not true. The German carmaker has confirmed that its upcoming electric coupe
will be something entirely new with no TT badge, no R8 badge, but a fresh identity. According to Autocar UK, CEO Gernot Döllner put it very clearly, “The Concept C is not a successor of the TT. It's a different segment to the TT - it's somewhere exactly in the middle between TT and R8. We will come up with a name once the car hits the road as a serious product." However, this new EV will be born from the Concept C and is expected to sit “almost precisely” between the classic TT and the legendary R8, which means it could pack more punch than the TT RS, that has 400 hp but won’t go as extreme as the R8’s V10 which has 600+ hp. Basically, it’s designed to bridge the gap in performance and price. Even though this is a pure EV, Audi wants drivers to feel as if they’re driving a gasoline car. The new coupe will have:
- Simulated gear shifts for you to sense the car changing gears, even though EVs don’t need them.
- Fake engine sounds, to bring back that emotional roar missing from silent electric motors.
It may sound unusual, but other automakers are doing it too, like BMW’s upcoming electric M3, Kia’s EV6 GT, and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N already play with fake gears and sound effects.
While performance is the focus, the biggest mystery right now is the name. Döllner pointed out some hints that it might start “with an R,” but admitted, “Sometimes it’s easier to develop a car than find a name for it.” For now, Concept C is just a placeholder.
