Good news for car lovers who thought that the V-12 engine was on its way out. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its legendary 12-cylinder engine will stay
alive for at least another decade, though exactly where it will be sold is still behind the curtain. At present, Mercedes offers the V-12 only in its upper segment luxurious sedan ‘Maybach S680’. This engine is famous for being super smooth, super powerful, and of course, super expensive. For many auto enthusiasts, the V-12 represents the peak of luxury and engineering. However, he didn’t say where these models will still be available, in Europe or North America, since new emission rules in Europe after 2026 will make it hard for the current V-12 to survive there. Mercedes started making V-12 engines in 1991, when it launched the S600 to compete with BMW’s 7-Series. Over the years, brand pushed the V-12 into new directions like the 600-hp CLK GTR race car and special AMG models. Interestingly, the iconic Pagani hypercars rely on Mercedes V-12 engines to this day. In today’s world, most carmakers are moving to smaller engines, hybrids, or full EVs. Even Mercedes has a new V-8 that follows demanding requirements. That’s why keeping the V-12 alive feels like keeping a piece of automotive chronicle alive, which is much like owning an expensive iconic Swiss watch in the age of smartwatches.
