What is the story about?

The Tesla Cybertruck has earned a ‘Good’ overall rating in crash tests conducted by the US-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The rating follows
structural upgrades introduced in April 2025, placing the Cybertruck among the better-performing electric vehicles currently on sale in North America.
In the moderate overlap front crash test, the Cybertruck showed a low injury risk for the driver dummy with minimal concerns over head, chest and leg protection. The rear passenger dummy, however, recorded a moderate risk of chest injury. These results align with the model’s five-star rating from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Cybertruck also performed strongly in collision avoidance tests. It successfully avoided impacts at 12 mph (19.3 km/h) and 25 mph (40.2 km/h) in both daylight and nighttime conditions, an area where several electric vehicles have struggled.

Despite these positives, the Cybertruck missed out on the IIHS Top Safety Pick award. The key drawback was its lighting performance. The IIHS rated the truck’s headlights ‘poor’ due to excessive glare and weak illumination on the left side of the road. This limited its visibility during left turns and affected the overall safety score.
Other electric vehicles were also evaluated. The BMW i4, Chevrolet Blazer EV and Volkswagen ID.Buzz achieved ‘Good’ ratings. The Tesla Model 3 received an ‘Acceptable’ score, while the Ford F-150 Lightning and Nissan Ariya performed less favourably. Although the Cybertruck is not yet sold in India, its crash-test results are significant for Indian buyers following global EV safety standards.
