EQB Electric SUV: Why Mercedes Issued Recall

For all the luxury EV brand lovers, this update might be surprising that Mercedes-Benz had to recall its EQB electric SUV, and the reason behind it is ‘The

Battery’.

First Recall

The brand found that some EQB models built between December 2021 and January 2024 could have a problem inside their high-voltage battery. In scare cases, this issue might cause a short circuit, which could then lead to fire, whether the car is being driven or just parked.

To be safe, Mercedes asked owners to limit battery charging to 80% until they release a new software update to fix this issue, mentioning that this update will be provided free of cost. But there is a good news that, while there have been some fire-related cases in China, no such incidents in the US were reported so far.

Second Recall

Mercedes-Benz also issued another recall for 660 units of the 2022–2023 manufactured EQB 300 4MATIC and EQB 350 4MATIC. This time the issue was not fire but losing the battery power unexpectedly.

What exactly happened was- a tiny screw inside the battery pack was not fitted properly by the supplier. This mistake could cause the car to lose power suddenly and untimely without warning, that caused the vehicle to suddenly stop moving which is a big risk all together.

Mercedes stated that before this happens, drivers won’t get any warning signs, although if the issue occurs, a message may pop up on the vehicle’s screen. This problem was discovered after field complaints and testing in 2023, and by early 2025, Mercedes confirmed it was a manufacturing error with the screws in the battery but not the fire issue.

Implications

For cars with the power loss issue of the battery, Mercedes will likely replace the high-voltage battery or repair it by fitting corrected connections or screws. The supplier has already changed its production process for the safety and to prevent this from happening again.
