The Indian car market may be dominated by SUVs, but the instant sell-out of the Mini Cooper S Convertible proves that there is still strong love for fun
and stylish cars. Within just 24 hours of its launch, the first batch of the Mini Cooper S Convertible was completely booked in India, surprising many and highlighting a growing appetite for niche, lifestyle-oriented vehicles. Mini India confirmed that the Cooper S Convertible was introduced at an ex-showroom price of Rs 58.50 lakh as a fully imported model which is also known as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Because CBUs attract higher taxes, they are usually expensive and brought to India in very limited numbers. While Mini has not revealed how many cars were included in the first batch, the fact that all units were sold within a day clearly shows strong demand for this car. Bookings are now open for the second batch, which is expected to arrive in early 2026. The biggest reason is its unique positioning, as the Mini Cooper S Convertible is currently the most affordable convertible car available in India. For buyers who want the joy of open-top driving without spending over a crore, this Mini becomes an attractive option. It also joins a recent trend where limited imported performance cars have seen quick sell-outs, which is similar to models like the Skoda Octavia RS and the Volkswagen Golf GTI earlier this year. The Cooper S Convertible is equipped with a powerful 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, and it produces 201 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, paired with a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. For a small and light car, these numbers translate into superb performance. Mini claims the car can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 240 kmph. The convertible roof is another major attraction, as it uses an electrically operated fabric soft-top that can open in 18 seconds and close in 15 seconds, even while driving at speeds of up to 30 kmph. There is also a “sunroof mode” that partially opens the roof, perfect for enjoying fresh air without fully going open-top. From the inside, the Mini Cooper S Convertible focuses heavily on technology and premium feel and one of the highlights is a large circular 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen running Mini Operating System 9 with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Voice commands are supported through the Mini Intelligent Personal Assistant, activated by saying “Hey Mini.” Features like a head-up display, electrically adjustable sports seats with a driver-side massage function, ambient lighting, wireless charging and a Harman Kardon sound system further enhance the experience. The Mini Cooper S Convertible sold out quickly because it offers something rare in India which is a stylish open-top car with strong performance, modern technology and brand appeal, all in a relatively accessible luxury price bracket.
