The rising popularity of the compact SUV in India has led to several carmakers competing in the highly competitive segment. One such carmaker is Kia India,
which has just announced that its Sonet compact SUV has now crossed the 5 lakh cumulative sales mark in the country. The Sonet was first launched in India in September 2020 and the latest achievement comes a bit over 5 years since then. Considering Kia positions its cars on the premium end of every segment, the success of the Sonet highlights the Indian car buyers' shift in preference. The Sonet is among the models that have been developed under Kia's 'Make in India, for the World' initiative. Along with domestic sales, the Sonet has also crossed the 1 lakh mark in exports to 70 nations. In India, the Sonet now makes up approximately 35 percent of Kia's overall domestic sales. The arrival of the updated model in 2024 seems to have further helped the Sonet's mass appeal. That is because Kia has reported sales of over 1 lakh Sonet SUVs consecutively over the past two years.
The other major factor behind the Sonet's success can be attributed to the diverse powertrain and variant lineup that Kia offers, making it accessible to a large set of car buyers. The SUV currently offers the option of two petrol and one diesel engine, along with a 6-speed manual and multiple kinds of automatic transmissions. Between its 9 trim levels, the Sonet is priced between Rs 7.30 lakh and Rs 13.65 lakh ex-showroom. This makes the Kia Sonet a top choice for may first time SUV buyers despite its premium positioning.

It also comes with connected features that let users operate vehicle functions remotely. Safety is also well taken care of with standard features such as 6 airbags and Level 1 ADAS functions in the higher trims, including lane keep assist, lane follow assist and more.
