Skoda Auto India has officially confirmed that the carmaker is evaluating the launch of its first electric car in the country by 2027-28. The evaluation
is being made keeping a localised supplier base in mind, which would help keep costs down for the brand's first electric model. This also means that the new EV would not be a completely built or knocked down import, which leads to exorbitant import duties. Confirming the news, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India, said, 'We are evaluating to launch the electric car in India during 2027-28 after setting up a localised supplier base. By this time, we will get the time to set up the supplier base, and the charging infrastructure would also develop.' Gupta further suggested that based on the current EV market share of 10-12 percent of the overall market, the decision to bring the new EV in the next 18 months would be well timed.
Skoda currently has three car models on sale in India, these include the Kylaq entry-level SUV, the Kushaq SUV and the Slavia sedan. While the Kylaq has helped Skoda's sales numbers between January to September 2025, the brand still accounts for just 1.7 percent of the overall market. This makes the timely arrival of a well-pricedell priced electric option, the need of the hour in order to maintain Skoda's number seven position among top car manufacturers.
The Czech carmaker is also expanding its customer touchpoints across the country to increase accessibility for existing and prospective customers. Skoda India currently has 315 customer touchpoints across India and it plans to expand this to 350 by end of this year, with focus on Tier 2 and 3 cities.
Price Expectations:
Considering that Skoda India will focus on heavily localising the new electric car, the carmaker is likely planning to target the mass market segment that ranges between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. What remains to be seen is if Skoda will utlisie the made-for-India MQB-A0 platform to develop the EV, or will it deem feasible to have an EV-specific platform built from the ground up.
