There are some films that never really leave Bollywood fans. More than two decades later, just hearing the words “baar baar haan” or seeing a dusty cricket pitch is enough to bring back memories of Lagaan.
The film wasn’t just a sports drama, it became a cultural moment, turning village cricket into cinematic magic and giving audiences one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic collaborations between Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. Now, 25 years later, reports suggest the duo could be heading back to familiar territory once again.
According to reports, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are reuniting for a new cricket-based emotional drama inspired by the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. The project is reportedly in the advanced scripting stage and is expected to begin production around September 2026.
Unlike Lagaan, which blended fictional storytelling with colonial-era sports drama, the upcoming film is said to be rooted in history and set around the time of India’s Partition in 1947. Reports claim the story will explore Lala Amarnath’s life and journey while using cricket as the emotional backbone of the narrative.
Industry buzz also suggests the script has already gone through several reading sessions. Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi are reportedly believed to have offered creative inputs during the development process.
For many fans, the biggest excitement comes from seeing Aamir return to the cricket genre after Lagaan, which remains one of the most celebrated sports dramas in Indian cinema. Released in 2001, the film earned global recognition, became India’s entry to the Oscars and continues to enjoy cult status even today.
Reports further suggest that the makers are planning the new project on a large scale, with extensive workshops, detailed research sessions and long pre-production schedules already being discussed before filming begins next year.
There is also speculation that another major actor may soon join the cast to play the role of Lala Amarnath’s close friend and a parallel lead in the film.
The reported sports drama is expected to kickstart Aamir Khan’s packed slate of upcoming projects lined up from late 2026 onward. After completing work on this film, the actor is reportedly expected to move to filmmaker Rahul Mody’s startup-based drama alongside Shraddha Kapoor.
At the same time, Aamir is also being linked to the much-talked-about sequel to 3 Idiots, which reports suggest may begin production in the second half of 2027.
