WhatsApp has introduced bill payments in India, allowing users to find, manage and pay everyday household and utility bills directly through the messaging app, the company said on September 3.
The feature
is being rolled out gradually to users across India and will be available to all Android and iOS users in the coming weeks, WhatsApp said.
The launch is part of the Meta-owned company’s broader push to expand financial services on its platform and deepen its presence in India’s digital payments ecosystem.
Powered by the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) network, WhatsApp’s bill payment service will provide access to around 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments.
Users can access the service by tapping the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. They will be able to view past and upcoming bills, manage multiple accounts under a single biller and make payments using their preferred mode, including UPI, credit cards and debit cards.
Arun Srinivas, managing director and country head-Meta (India), said, “For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance — all without leaving the app.”
He added, “With Bill payments, we’re bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household…We want to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message, and help bring the convenience of digital payments to people across the remotest parts of the country.”
India remains WhatsApp’s biggest market, with more than 600 million users. The company also appointed Cred founder Kunal Shah as its global leader in June.
The bill payment launch comes amid a rise in the adoption of WhatsApp’s payments service in India. WhatsApp Pay processed 150 million transactions in June 2026, more than four times the 37 million transactions recorded in June 2024.
Its share of UPI transaction volume also increased to around 0.7 percent in June 2026 from 0.27 percent in the same month two years earlier.
The growth helped WhatsApp Pay overtake Cred to become the eighth-largest UPI app in India by transaction volume in June 2026.
