ITR Filing Last Date: As the due date for filing the income tax return for FY2024-25 is approaching, taxpayers are advised to complete their tax duties without delay. The tax department has extended the due date for filing the ITR-
FY2024-25 (AY 2025-26) to September 15, 2025 from July 31st, 2025. This new due date applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and other taxpayers whose accounts don’t require auditing.
The CBDT ascribed the extension to the extensive changes implemented in the notified ITRs, citing the time needed for system readiness and the rollout of Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26.
Taxpayers whose accounts need to be audited—such as companies, proprietorships, and working partners in firms—have until October 31, 2025, to file their income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26).
Before they can do that, they must ensure their audit report is submitted by September 30, 2025. As of now, the Income Tax Department has not announced any extension to this deadline.
Is Filing ITR After Due Date Possible?
Taxpayers can still file their income tax returns post the due date, which is September 15, 2025 for non-audit taxpayers. If you file the ITR post the due date then it will be filed under belated ITR. The last date for filing ITR is December 31st, 2025.
However, keep in mind that filing late might attract a penalty or reduce some tax benefits.
Tax Dept Issues Public Warning
The Income Tax Department has issued a public warning to taxpayers about a new phishing scam targeting individuals who have recently filed their Income Tax Returns (ITR). According to an alert posted on X (formerly Twitter), scammers are sending fake emails claiming there has been an error in tax calculation and that a refund is due. The emails urge recipients to click on a link — a trap designed to steal personal and financial information.
The fraudulent email comes from the ID: donotreply@incometaxindiafilling.gov.in, which closely mimics the official domain. The department has clarified that it never requests sensitive details like passwords, OTPs, or bank information via phone, email, or SMS.
Taxpayers are advised to avoid clicking on suspicious links, verify communication from official domains (@incometax.gov.in), and report phishing attempts to webmanager@incometax.gov.in.
