Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned on Friday after admitting she had underpaid stamp duty on a property. Her resignation is seen as a major setback for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer
and his Labour government, just months before the next general election.
Rayner stepped down following the results of an independent investigation, which found that she did not properly follow legal advice she had received at the time of the property purchase. The report stated she had breached the ministerial code by failing to act on the caution given to her.
In her resignation statement, Rayner said she accepted the findings and had decided to leave her post in light of them. She added that while the mistake was unintentional, ministers must be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
