Coolie Vs War 2 Box Office Collection: In an epic box office showdown, Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 were released together on August 14. Despite stiff competition, both films had superb
openings, leaving the makers hopeful that the Independence Day weekend would provide an extra surge to the films’ collection. How have the films fared after a long holiday weekend, and who is leading the race?
After four days, including three holidays, Coolie’s domestic collection stands at Rs 194.25 crore. As per the report published by Sacnilk, Coolie earned Rs 35 crore in India (net) on its fourth day for all languages. As for War 2, the film minted Rs 31 crore on Sunday, taking its total to Rs 173.60 crore. Both films witnessed their lowest openings on Sunday. However, there is now a total gap of Rs 20.65 between the two films’ collections.

Makers of both films expected heavy footfall in theatres, given that Independence Day was on Friday, followed by Janmashtami on Saturday and a holiday on Sunday. However, both films have faced a drop in collections. But Rajinikanth’s Coolie has edged ahead of Hrithik Roshan’s War 2.
This has been a trend in this box office showdown, except on the second day. Coolie opened with impressive numbers and witnessed a Rs 65 crore opening in India. On August 14, the film gave intense competition to War 2, which had opened to Rs 52.5 crore. However, on Day 2, War 2 took over the race when it minted Rs 57.35 crore against Coolie’s 54.75 crore. However, Rajinikanth’s film still had a higher total collection at the domestic box office. The film generated significant hype and joined the Rs 100 crore club in just two days.
On Day 3, Coolie earned Rs 39.5 crore against War 2’s 33.25 crore, taking the lead once again. On Sunday, Coolie minted Rs 35 crore and War 2 earned Rs 31 crore. Interestingly, despite the holiday, both films witnessed their lowest openings on Sunday. While Coolie’s decline in numbers has been linear, War 2 witnessed a jump on Friday.
Overall, Coolie’s worldwide gross has crossed Rs 320 crore, setting a new milestone for Tamil cinema in 2025. Meanwhile, by Saturday, War 2 had already crossed Rs 215 crore worldwide. The competition is tough, but both films need to hold their own in the second and third weeks.
Coolie Review
News18 Showsha gave Coolie 4/5 stars. Our review read, “Rajinikanth is back! The legendary actor proves why he has been the swag king in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie. The film showcases the charismatic Rajini that we have missed on screen for a while now. Kanagaraj has managed to bring the swag back with Rajinikanth making a power-packed comeback.”
“As much as the action and Rajinikanth’s swag dominate the film, what impresses is the screenplay and story. The climax is packed not just with action, but the famous cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. The plot twists don’t end there. Wait till you watch the tail-end scene to be taken back in time. Overall, Lokesh Kanagaraj has managed to bring a banger to the theatres that need to be enjoyed on the big screen with a hall filled with Rajini fans,” our review also mentions.
War 2 Review
As for War 2, News18 Showsha gave the film 2.5/5 stars. Our review read, “The template is so formulaic that War 2 emerges as a jaded, done-to-death, globetrotting actioner. An espionage thriller is supposed to have a hero, a good guy-turned-arch-nemesis who feels that he has been wronged by a compatriot and a beauty-with-brains kind of a female spy, with dollops of gravity-defying action and a sexy dance number. But where’s the novelty? Where are the layers of storytelling? And most importantly, where’s the thrill? Sadly, War 2 is all style and no ammo.”
“The action is grand, as expected. The action team orchestrates set-pieces that span continents. There are breathless chases through narrow European lanes, close-combat duels dripping with intensity and aerial stunts that push the limits of plausibility. In the first half, there’s a sequence that takes place inside a private chopper. It’s stylised for sure but is also unintentionally funny,” our review also stated.
