ChatGPT users in India are facing issues with the AI chatbot app from OpenAI on Wednesday afternoon. The outage has been confirmed via multiple reports on Downdetector and the company itself has acknowledged
the issue, as ‘elevated error rate with ChatGPT’ being mentioned on the OpenAI status page.
Many ChatGPT users have shared their frustration with delayed responses from the AI chatbot, while some of them are not able to access the platform altogether.
The ChatGPT outage reports started around 11:30 AM IST on August 20, 2025 and have escalated with over four hundred reports cited on the outage tracker platform. The majority of these complaints are related to the ChatGPT app. OpenAI has identified and is monitoring the error issues faced by ChatGPT and as per the latest update, it is working on implementing another mitigation.
As per the latest update from OpenAI at 1:24 PM IST, all the impacted services have now fully recovered, which means ChatGPT should be running in its usual state for all users.
The latest ChatGPT down time comes 24 hours after OpenAI launched its first India-exclusive ChatGPT Go plan. The new ChatGPT option is priced at Rs 399 per month, making it far cheaper than the ChatGPT Plus plan which comes for Rs 1,999 per month.
