Holi may last only a day, but its effects on the skin can linger far longer. Between synthetic colours, prolonged sun exposure, sweat, and repeated washing, the skin often goes through significant stress
during the celebrations. While most people rush to remove every trace of colour immediately after the festivities, skincare experts say the real priority should extend beyond cleansing. Post-Holi care, they explain, should focus on restoring hydration, strengthening the skin barrier, and calming inflammation so the skin can recover naturally.
Experts across the beauty and skincare industry agree that aggressive cleansing can do more harm than good. Swagatika Das, CEO and Co-founder of Nat Habit, explains, “Holi is a beautiful celebration of colours and togetherness, but the pigments, sun exposure, and repeated washing during the festivities can be quite stressful for the skin. While most people focus on removing colour immediately after Holi, what the skin truly needs is nourishment and barrier repair.”
Gentle Cleansing Is Only The First Step
The first instinct after Holi is often to scrub the skin vigorously to remove stubborn colours. However, experts caution that this can strip away the skin’s natural oils and worsen irritation.
“Harsh scrubbing or excessive cleansing can leave the skin dry, irritated, and more vulnerable to sensitivity,” says Das. Instead, she recommends opting for gentle cleansing methods that remove pigments without disrupting the skin’s natural balance.
Similarly, Swati Gupta, Capability Director and Head of Creative Development at Bodycraft Salons, notes that while cleansing is necessary, it should be done with care. “Post-Holi skincare should focus on restoring and nourishing the skin barrier, not just removing colour. Excessive washing or harsh scrubbing can further damage skin that is already dehydrated and sensitised after the festivities,” she says.
Repairing The Skin Barrier
Holi colours, especially synthetic ones, combined with sun exposure and environmental pollutants, can weaken the skin barrier. Once compromised, the skin may appear dull, dry, and more prone to irritation or breakouts.
Gupta explains that the post-Holi routine should prioritise calming and repairing ingredients. She says, “Start with a gentle cleanser to remove remaining colour and follow it with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, aloe vera or niacinamide, which help restore moisture and support barrier repair.”
Natural ingredients can also play a soothing role. Das highlights the benefits of traditional remedies, noting that ingredients such as aloe vera, milk, sandalwood, rose, and cold-pressed oils help calm inflammation while replenishing lost hydration.
Hydration And Sun Protection Are Key
Beyond barrier repair, hydration and sun protection become essential steps in post-Holi skincare.
Malini Adapureddy, Founder and CEO of Deconstruct, points out that cleansing alone addresses only the surface. She says, “During the celebrations, the skin is exposed to synthetic pigments, alkaline dyes, sun exposure and repeated washing. All of this weakens the skin barrier, strips away moisture and increases inflammation.”
She further emphasises that Indian skin, which is often prone to pigmentation, can react strongly to these stressors. “Without daily use of a broad-spectrum SPF, even mild sun exposure can deepen pigmentation and slow down recovery,” she added.
For this reason, experts recommend incorporating deeply hydrating moisturisers or nourishing masks to restore lost moisture while ensuring consistent sunscreen use in the days following the festival.
What To Avoid Immediately After Holi
While the temptation to exfoliate away residual colour may be strong, experts advise taking a break from active-heavy skincare products for a few days. Strong exfoliants, retinoids, or chemical peels can aggravate already sensitised skin. Instead, focusing on soothing and repairing formulations allows the skin to regain balance gradually without triggering further irritation.
Holi may be synonymous with vibrant colours and joyful celebration, but the aftermath calls for a more mindful skincare approach. When the focus shifts from simply removing colour to restoring the skin’s natural balance, recovery becomes faster, and the complexion retains its healthy glow long after the festivities are over.
