The annual Amarnath Yatra is set to return in 2026, drawing lakhs of devotees to the revered Amarnath Cave Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. Managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, the pilgrimage is one
of India’s most significant spiritual journeys, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Registration process
Registration for the yatra is mandatory and typically begins weeks in advance through both online and offline channels. Devotees must:
Fill out the application form via the Shrine Board’s official website or designated bank branches
Submit a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) issued by authorised doctors
Carry a valid ID proof
Each day has a fixed quota of pilgrims, so early registration is strongly advised.
Yatra dates and duration
The yatra usually takes place between June and August, coinciding with the Shravan month. Final dates are announced annually by the Shrine Board, depending on weather and security conditions.
Routes to the shrine
Pahalgam route (traditional route)
Longer but more gradual and scenic
Key stops: Pahalgam → Chandanwari → Sheshnag → Panchtarni → Holy Cave
Preferred by pilgrims who want a traditional trekking experience
Baltal route (shorter route)
Shorter but steeper and more physically demanding
Can be completed in 1–2 days
Helicopter services are also available from Baltal and Pahalgam
Health and safety guidelines
Given the high altitude (over 3,800 metres), pilgrims must be physically fit. Authorities advise:
Acclimatisation before the trek
Carrying essential medicines and warm clothing
Avoiding the yatra if suffering from serious health conditions
Security and facilities
The yatra is conducted under tight security, with arrangements including:
Medical camps and emergency services
RFID tracking for pilgrims
Accommodation via tents and base camps
Langars (community kitchens) along the route
What this means for devotees
The Amarnath Yatra is not just a trek but a deeply spiritual experience. With stricter registration, improved tracking, and enhanced facilities, the 2026 edition aims to balance devotion with safety.
For those planning to undertake the journey, preparation is key, register early, choose your route wisely, and prioritise health to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage.
