In a major overhaul of India’s domestic cooking gas system, the government has introduced a fresh set of rules for LPG consumers starting May 1, 2026. The changes, brought in by the Ministry of Petroleum
and Natural Gas, are aimed at improving transparency, tightening supply systems and reducing misuse.
The move comes as oil companies reassess distribution in the wake of global energy disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia. For households, the new rules will change how cylinders are booked, delivered and verified.
Booking Interval Extended
Consumers in urban areas will now have to wait at least 25 days between bookings, compared to the earlier 21 days. In rural areas, this gap can go up to 45 days. Any attempt to book before the allowed period will be automatically blocked by the system.
OTP-Based Delivery Made Mandatory
The Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system is now compulsory. Customers will receive an OTP on their registered mobile number at the time of booking, which must be shared with the delivery agent. Physical documents like the blue book or receipt will no longer be accepted for delivery.
Aadhaar-Based e-KYC Required
The government has made Aadhaar-based e-KYC mandatory for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Consumers who have not completed the process are advised to do so at the earliest. Officials have clarified that this rule applies only to those who have not already completed e-KYC.
Dual Connections Banned
Households using both LPG and piped natural gas (PNG) will no longer be allowed to keep both connections. They will be required to surrender their LPG connection. Oil companies and distributors have been instructed not to supply cylinders to such households.
The government believes these steps will bring better control to the system and ensure that LPG benefits reach the right users.
