A Reddit post has caught attention after a Delhi resident shared how a simple gut feeling helped him avoid losing a large amount of money. The post describes a close call with a scam linked to a cash-on-delivery
order placed on Amazon.
The incident highlights how scammers are using new tricks that can easily confuse people, especially those who are not used to such fraud methods.
A Strange Call Raised Suspicion
The Reddit user explained that the incident happened in 2022 when he had just arrived in Delhi from a tier-2 city. He had ordered a mobile phone from Amazon on cash on delivery for Rs 28,000. According to the post, “In 2022, I was in Delhi and ordered a mobile from Amazon: COD Rs 28,000. A guy called me and was waiting downstairs, he said to pay him the money and that the Amazon Van is on its way.”
Since the user had not seen such scams before, the request felt unusual. Still, something did not feel right. He decided not to pay immediately and asked the man to wait until the Amazon delivery van arrived, as it was an open box delivery.
The Scammer Left Without Money
The post adds that when the user asked him to wait, the man started making excuses and left in a hurry. “But at that moment fortunately something in my gut told me not to pay,” the user wrote.
To be safe, the user then called the actual Amazon delivery person using the number linked to the order. He explained the situation, and the delivery agent clearly told him not to give money to anyone else and said he was on the way.
A Larger Scam Comes To Light
Later that day, the user met the original delivery agent near a metro station and learned more about what had happened. “Turns out he had scammed around 10-12 people in a week. Same method, and always targeted large payments like mobile tv laptop.”
The Reddit post, titled “Gut feeling saved me,” was shared on January 13 and received a few upvotes along with several comments.
Social Media Users Question Delivery Process
Many Reddit users reacted to the story. A user commented, “Scamsters on the Rise, good thing you did not pay him and contacted the delivery person.”
Others had questions about how the scam worked. “Does Amazon have open box delivery?” a person asked. Another said, “You went to meet the delivery guy? I thought they deliver it to your home, or you collect it from a designated pick up spot,” while someone else questioned, “How did he come to know about your order delivery?”
An individual also added, “They have started doing this very recently for some products.”
