Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary rise has made him one of the most exciting young athletes in world sport, and the 15-year-old now stands on the verge of another historic milestone.
If selected for
India’s opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday, the left-handed opener will become the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.

The Bihar youngster has enjoyed a meteoric ascent over the past two years. After making his senior debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy at just 12, he became the youngest player to secure an IPL contract when Rajasthan Royals signed him at the age of 13. His breakthrough IPL campaign this year firmly established him as one of cricket’s brightest talents, as he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, smashed a record number of sixes and was named the competition’s Most Valuable Player.
Cartoons And History
Former England captain Michael Vaughan recently recalled a light-hearted conversation that highlighted Sooryavanshi’s carefree attitude despite the growing spotlight surrounding him.
“I said, ‘How do you prepare for matches?'” Vaughan recounted on the “Stick to Cricket” show. “And he went, ‘Watching cartoons.’ I said, ‘What do you eat?’ He went, ‘Everything.’
“There’s the modern player: Watch a cartoon, eat what you want, smack it out of the ground.”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s explosive strokeplay has drawn comparisons with several of the game’s greatest batters. His high backlift, quick hands and effortless power have impressed experts, while his fearless approach has seen him dominate some of the world’s premier fast bowlers.
The teenager has continued to break records outside the IPL as well. Earlier this year, he starred in India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph before smashing an 11-ball half-century for India A against Sri Lanka A, setting a new List A world record.
Looking To Dominate
Despite his remarkable achievements, Sooryavanshi has made it clear that he views his journey as only just beginning.
After being named MVP in the IPL, Sooryavanshi said in an in-house interview by Rajasthan that he wanted to play all three formats — T20, 50-over and test — for India “in such a way that I should not just play but dominate for 10-20 years.”
His remarkable rise has inevitably drawn comparisons with sporting prodigies such as Pele, Lamine Yamal, Nadia Comaneci, Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis. Should he make his debut in Belfast, Sooryavanshi will add another milestone to an already unprecedented career trajectory.
