Delhi Police’s IFSO unit registered more than four FIRs against social media handles allegedly spreading false narratives and attempting to vitiate the atmosphere in the country, sources said.
According
to the sources, an anti-India narrative is being propagated through social media platforms from across the border. Police have also taken action against several Pakistani social media handles, some of which have reportedly been deactivated.
The action comes amid heightened tensions in the national capital following the de-notification of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest venue and a series of demonstrations by leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). On Tuesday morning, CJP leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde were detained by Delhi Police after they allegedly entered the Jantar Mantar protest area by jumping over a gate and staged a demonstration with party volunteers.
A video shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed the leaders and volunteers entering the area with flags before raising slogans as police personnel moved to stop them. The protesters were heard raising slogans including “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inquilab Zindabaad”.
Abhijeet Dipke later confirmed that the three leaders and other party members had been detained. CJP described the demonstration as an attempt to reclaim Jantar Mantar as a protest site and opposed the police’s decision to withdraw its designated-venue status.
Pakistani Handles Posted False Reports About Protest Deaths
Sources said that on October 10, several Pakistani social media handles circulated false reports claiming that multiple people had died during the protests. The police have also been examining online content allegedly intended to spread misinformation and fuel tensions. The IFSO unit has registered more than four FIRs in connection with social media handles allegedly circulating such narratives, sources said. Several Pakistani handles have since been deactivated.
