Bhopal News: Electricity theft detection in Bhopal has undergone a major transformation with the introduction of smart meters, enabling authorities to identify illegal power use in real time without waiting
for public complaints.
Earlier, electricity companies largely acted only after receiving information about suspected theft. Now, smart meters automatically generate digital alerts whenever tampering or unauthorised power consumption is detected. The alert is sent directly to the control room, which immediately notifies the vigilance team for on-the-spot action.
Three Tenants Found Using Illegal Connections
One such case recently came to light in Subhash Colony, where officials inspected a three-storey house owned by Geeta Tendulkar. During the inspection, three tenants were allegedly found drawing electricity by connecting wires directly from an electric pole instead of using authorised meter connections. Officials said that as the vigilance team arrived, Raju Tendulkar attempted to remove the illegal wires. However, the smart meter had already transmitted a digital alert to the control room.
The inspection revealed an illegal electricity load of around 18 kilowatts. Following the raid, the electricity company issued an assessment bill of Rs 2.35 lakh.
Smart Meters Monitor Multiple Forms Of Tampering
According to officials of the city circle, smart meters continuously monitor various forms of tampering and instantly record suspicious activity on the central server.
These include attempts to break the meter seal, open the meter, connect electricity directly from poles, tamper with the neutral line or divert power from another supply line. Any such activity immediately triggers an alert for further investigation.
More Cases Unearthed Across The City
In another case in Rahul Nagar, officials found electricity being stolen through an illegal cut in the incoming line of the meter. A 5-kilowatt unauthorised load was detected, leading to an assessment bill of approximately Rs 90,000.
Meanwhile, in Sundar Nagar, officials discovered electricity being supplied directly from a pole to nine rented rooms. The inspection uncovered an illegal load of around 9 kilowatts.
Over 900 Cases Detected In Two Months
The electricity company said digital monitoring has significantly strengthened enforcement against power theft. More than 900 cases have been detected over the past two months, while the figure has crossed 1,000 in the last three months.
Officials noted that most electricity theft occurs during the night or in the early morning hours. In response, vigilance teams have been conducting special inspection drives from 6 am.
The recent enforcement campaigns have resulted in assessment bills worth lakhs of rupees being issued for recovery. Authorities said the use of smart meters has made it possible to detect power theft much faster, reducing dependence on complaints and allowing immediate action against offenders.
