Tamil Nadu Polls 2026: With polling for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly scheduled for April 23, the state is headed for a high-stakes, multi-cornered contest. While the traditional DMK–AIADMK rivalry
remains the core battle, the entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay in the poll fray has turned the dynamics.
As Tamil Nadu is poised to witness a significant shift from its traditional two-party contest to a more complex three-cornered battle, several constituencies have been turned into into key battlegrounds that could shape the final outcome.
Who Are The Key Candidates?
Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin is seeking to consolidate his governance record to opposition leader and NDA CM face Edappadi K Palaniswami. As a new entrant, Vijay himself is fighting the Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026 on two seats – Perambur and Tiruchirappally East. Another twist has been added by former chief minister O Panneerselvam, who switched to the DMK after being expelled from the AIADMK. He will contest from the Bodinayakanur seat, a constituency that he has represented in the past.
MK Stalin (CM and DMK Chief)
As the incumbent chief minister, Stalin is contesting from his political stronghold Kolathur, a seat he has held comfortably for multiple terms. His campaign is centred on welfare schemes, infrastructure push, and administrative continuity
Udhayanidhi Stalin (DMK)
Udhayanidhi Stalin represents the next generation of DMK leadership and is a key campaigner across the state. Contesting from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, he is positioned as a youth face who blends politics with cultural outreach.
Edappadi K Palaniswami (AIADMK)
The AIADMK leader and Leader of Opposition is central to the NDA-aligned challenge against the DMK. Contesting from his home turf, Palaniswami is attempting to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment and revive the party after its internal splits.
Tamilisai Soundararajan (BJP)
A senior BJP leader and former Telangana governor, Tamilisai is contesting from the prominent Mylapore seat in Chennai. Her candidature reflects BJP’s strategy to gain urban traction and leverage recognisable faces. She has been actively countering the DMK’s narrative while positioning the BJP as a governance-focused alternative.
Vijay (TVK)
Vijay’s electoral debut is one of the biggest talking points of this election. With a massive fan base, particularly among youth, his entry has disrupted traditional vote calculations. His party, TVK, is attempting to position itself as an alternative to both Dravidian majors, focusing on governance, anti-corruption messaging, and political reform. His performance could reshape opposition space in Tamil Nadu.
Seeman (NTK)
Seeman continues to be a consistent ideological challenger, campaigning on Tamil identity, environmental protection, and anti-establishment rhetoric. While NTK has not translated its vote share into large seat wins so far, it retains a committed grassroots base.
Polling is set to be held on April 23 and campaigning is allowed till 5 pm on April 21. Political parties and candidates are taking full advantage of this window and multiple rallies and events are being organised across the state.
